Arbanta Red 2005
Biurko Gorri
D.O. Ca. Rioja

Biurko Gorri is located in Bargota, a small town on the slopes of Mount Yoar, part of the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria, the mountain range which provides Rioja with a natural border to the North. The Bodega belongs to the Llorens family, who also own thirty hectares of vineyards in the adjacent towns of Labraza, Viana and Bargota. The majority of the vines are on chalky soils.

The most important characteristics which define quality grapes the wines at Biurko Gorri are: natural selection of location of the vineyard, inherited from generation to generation; well ventilated vineyards at high altitudes, planted on relatively poor soils which limit production; a high number of sunny days with great fluctuation of temperatures between day and night.

The family has a holistic, often painstaking approach to winemaking, starting with the treatment of the soil. Only organic animal and plant fertilizers are used. The intention is to obtain a well balanced soil that ensures vines grow strong and are naturally protected against disease. Preventative plant health controls with natural elements( sulphur, copper in small quantities, clay, marsh horsetail purines, sexual confusion techniques, etc.) are utilized. The organic nature of the vineyard combined with very old vineyard sites produce wines of distinct quality.

The Wine Advocate

D.O. Ca. Rioja

The most famous, and first, Denomination of Origin in Spain is Rioja. Its vineyards are divided into three main viticultural areas; Rioja Baja, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta. Growers who sell their products to the Rioja houses who traditionally are not big vineyard holders control the majority of the vineyards. These traditional, large houses usually blend grapes from the three regions to create a house style.

Aging Requirements - Crianza wines must be aged a minimum of one year on oak and one year in the bottle before being released. Reservas must be aged a minimum of one year in oak but two years in the bottle. Gran Reservas must spend two full years in oak and three years aging in the bottle prior to their release. Some of the top wineries are beginning to phase this system out in the production of their wines. Instead of using the cellar aging requirements of the DO, they are using vineyard site to designate their wines.
