Crianza 2003
Viña Sastre
Ribera del Duero
Viña Sastre is a family-run winery located in the heart of the D.O. in the town of La Horra. It boasts some of the oldest vineyards in the Ribera del Duero Region.
Jesus Sastre is the wine maker and vineyard manager, his philosophies and wine making talents have been a driving force of the winery. Committed to organic farming and bio-dynamic agriculture principles, the level of his expertise is unquestioned. The two brothers inherited from their father and grandfather prime vineyard sites in the Burgos area of Ribera del Duero. Jesus has always respected the site and history of the vineyards his family has farmed.
He is continually reading about new viticulture techniques at the same time recovering old traditional farming methods of the past. All the wines are made in the most natural manner. They are never fined or filtered. The wines are cold stabilized naturally by moving the wine from the barrel room to separate tanks in a part of the winery whose temperature is naturally regulated by the outdoor temperatures. This is all a part of the vision that Jesus and Pedro shared for making wine in the most natural way possible.

Crianza 2003
The dense ruby/purple-hued Crianza exhibits a smoky, earthy, oaky nose. Plenty of extract and richness, but a slightly monolithic character. This is an excellent wine for the value, one that should not be over-looked.
Wine Maker’s Note: this was a great vintage for us. Sugar levels were very high yet acids were in balanced because of vineyard work. Made from 100% Tempranillo. Aged in new French Oak for 18 months and bottled unfiltered. |
D.O. Ribera del Duero
Since the mid 80's, Ribera del Duero has made some of the greatest wines in Spain. Thanks can be given to diligent and innovative wine making and attentive viticulture, along with a good ripening season (which is only 125 days long). The high alpine valleys of the Duero and its tributaries demand that the vines be rugged, kept free of diseases, and harvested with full ripeness before the autumn frosts.
